PRP is becoming a popular phrase not only among aesthetic physicians but also in the every day vocabulary of the general population, similar to the popularity and acceptance of Botox. PRP has gained a strong foothold in many areas of “regenerative” medicine but more lately in cosmetic medicine mainly for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration. Island Medical Laser offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and the newer, more potent, plasma rich fibrin (PRF) treatments for hair restoration that can improve the thickness of thinning hair and combat hair loss by repairing damaged hair follicles. This hair restoration treatment can yield natural-looking results and has little to no downtime or recovery period associated with it. PRP/PRF therapy is minimally invasive, non-surgical alternative to other hair treatments that require extensive surgical procedures with long recovery times.
Very simplistically here is what PRP is. Your blood is made up of several components. The two major ones are red blood cells and plasma. Within the plasma are platelets whose main function is to stimulate the clotting of blood, to stop bleeding. Interestingly, it has been found that platelets contain growth factors (a growth factor is a naturally occurring substance capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation). Therefore, when injected into the skin they act as if there has been injury and start repairing the skin, it produces the stimulation of collagen and other skin structures.
PRP/PRF are restorative therapies that consist of a concentrated level of platelets that work to regenerate and repair damaged hair follicles and stimulate hair growth and hair shaft thickness. When used for this purpose PRP/PRF stimulates circulation in the treated area and brings growth factors, stem cells and nutrients to the hair follicles resulting in healthier, fuller hair.
Although there are similarities between PRP and PRF it is the difference between these two products that make PRF stand out as the superior treatment.
Research shows that a platelet product that has an even higher concentration of platelets, as well as a higher concentration of white cells and stem cells, is even more effective than traditional platelet-rich plasma. Based on this new research, PRF was developed. The PRF product is spun at a lower speed so that the layers of the blood do not separate out as distinctly. This allows some of the white cells and stem cells to remain within the platelet layer that is collected for treatment. Thus, there are more healing factors within PRF than is typically seen in PRP. In addition, the lower spin speed of the centrifugation, causes less trauma to the individual blood cells, allowing more stem cells and growth factors to be available for the application process.
Another distinct difference between PRP and PRF is the concentration of platelets within the final injected product. Literature shows that an ideal concentration for a PRP sample is between 2-5 times the level of platelets typically found within the body. Newer studies now point out that an even higher concentration of platelets may be even more effective in the tretment of tissue damage. Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) products contain approximately 10 times the platelet concentration that is found within our bodies.
"Growth Factors" refers to the signaling proteins that stimulate cell growth, differentiation, survival, inflammation, and tissue repair. A great source for the harvesting of these growth factors is found in our body's production of platelets. The below chart shows some of the most significant growth factors found in platelets that contribute to hair rejuvenation.
